OvoControl is a ready-to-use bait that interferes with the reproduction of birds who consume the pellets, causing the population to decline. This effective and humane product is especially useful for managing pigeon flocks in Hawaii in larger areas without having to resort to poisons and their associated risks.
The simple answer is yes. Pigeons breed rapidly – just five mating pairs of pigeons can produce up to 400 babies in only two years. Fortunately, the life-span of urban pigeons in Hawaii is short, limited to just 2-3 years. When applied according to directions, OvoControl interferes with their egg hatchability. Since no new birds are hatching, the population of birds declines naturally and continuously. Field studies show a reduction of approximately 50%, annually. Recently collected data at a monitored site in San Diego reflected an 88% decline over 28 months.
The costs of running an effective OvoControl program are very affordable compared to any other bird management program available in Hawaii. The cost is based upon the following factors:
Size of flock
Number of feeding sites required
OvoControl bird management programs represent excellent long term value compared to all other available solutions. For more information and accurate quoting for your site, please contact a Sandwich Isle representative.
OvoControl P is applied with an automatic feeder at a rate of 1lb/80 pigeons per day.
Registered by EPA (Reg. No. 80224-1) and approved in all 50 states, OvoControl is ideal for large areas where some pigeons can be tolerated, but where a substantially reduced population is desired. OvoControl is non-hazardous and is advocated by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Audubon and Peregrine Fund.
OvoControl only has a contraceptive effect in birds and has no secondary effects in birds of prey. OvoControl is considered a pesticide and care should be taken to avoid administration to non-target birds and other animals. See the link for a current copy of the EPA-approved label.
Due to the abundance of threatened and endangered species, OvoControl use in Hawaii requires some additional steps. Included with our service, Sandwich Isle bird experts will handle all of these requirements:
Contact the Department of Land and Natural Resources and obtain a Wildlife Control Permit.
Identify if OvoControl may be used in the area. OvoControl cannot be applied in areas where nene goose (Nesochen sandvicensis), Hawaiian coot (Fulica alai), Hawaiian moorhen (Gallinula chloropus sandvicensis) and Hawaiian duck (Anas wyvilliana) are known to occupy or graze.
Notify the Pesticides Branch of the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture, in writing prior to use. Two weeks advance notice will be given to allow time for consultation with Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
At least two weeks prior to the time of intended application, contact the Pesticides Branch at the Hawaii Department of Agriculture.
