Learn More About Whiteflies, Aphids And Other Plant Pests In Hawaii

There’s a lot of talk about the pests that invade our homes, but what about those pests who enjoy plaguing our landscape? Plant pests can be a huge problem for homeowners in Hawaii trying to maintain their beautiful landscapes. There are many different types of plant pests that can cause damage and leave your gardens less than attractive. Sandwich Isle Pest Solutions, a Hawaii pest control company, would like to offer you some information on the different types of plant pests and also what pest control services can be provided to get rid of plant pests and keep them away.

There are five plant pests common to Hawaii and many of them cause the same damages to plants. Whiteflies, mealybugs, aphids, and scales are all small insects with piercing-sucking mouthparts that drain the fluid out of plants, leaving them damaged and weak. These pests also carry and spread diseases to plants that they feed on. Some of these insects like the mealybugs also leave a wax residue on the plants which protects them as they are feeding. The problem, like with many pests, is that these insects congregate in large numbers. So although one small whitefly may not be able to cause a lot of damage, there are sure to be many more nearby.

There are also thrips, which are small, cigar shaped insects. Among the many different species of thrips, some are known for feeding on pest insects and mites but some are just plain plant pests. The ones that cause damage to plants do so by feeding on pollen and new buds. Their feeding causes some plants to be deformed or have developmental problems. As with the other plant pests, thrips are also transmitters of many plant diseases.

Once plant pests have invaded your landscape, sooty mold may not be far behind. Sooty mold is a very descriptive name for a fungi that grows on the honeydew that has been secreted by plant pests like whiteflies, aphids and mealybugs. This fungi does not harm the plant itself, but can inhibit plant growth by blocking sunlight. For a full and beautiful landscape, it's best to eliminate all plant pests to avoid the damage they cause to your beautiful outdoor landscape.
