There are quite a few species of ants that live in Hawaii. Fortunately, most of them prefer to live away from humans. But, not all of them. There are four ant species that seem to like hanging out with us. They encroach on our lawns, survey our exterior walls, and they find ways to get into our homes and drive us crazy. Which four? We're glad you asked.
This is the largest and the worst of all the ants on our list. Carpenter ants are big, black ants with a reddish tint, and are destructive to property. These ants chew tunnels and galleries into wood, to make their nests, which can cause the structure of a home, deck, porch, patio, or garage to bend and warp. If you're finding ants inside your home, snatch it up and look closely at its waist. Between the thorax and the abdomen on ants you'll find something called "nodes." On the carpenter ants, there is one node. It looks like a tiny bead with a bit of a point on top. If you have carpenter ants, it is a good idea to have a professional come and treat for them as soon as possible to reduce the damage.
An ant you may mistake for a carpenter ant is a pavement ant. But pavement ants are half the size of carpenter ants, and if you're able to look closely at their tiny little body, you'll see that they have two nodes instead of one. If you have pavement ants, you don't have to worry about these insects hurting your home. But, they can crawl in trash or on dead animal carcasses and track harmful bacteria to places where you eat or prepare food.
While these ants won't hurt your home, they can hurt you, your children, and your pets. We are all aware that these ants sting, and that the sting from a fire ant can be irritating. But, what many don't know is that fire ants can be dangerous to those who can't get away from their stinging bites, such as elderly people, babies, and the infirm. It is also not widely known that fire ants can cause medical issues for dogs and cats. Identification of these pests is simple, they are red in color, and about ⅛ of an inch long.
While these ants look similar to fire ants, you'll want to know the differences because, unlike fire ants, pharaoh ants are just a nuisance pest. These ants have yellow with a hint of red, but are much tinier than fire ants, being only about 1/32 of an inch in length.
