We have many species of ants in Maui, but only a select few are an issue around our homes and businesses. Let's take a quick look at each of these pest ants and see what we can learn to protect ourselves.

Little Fire Ants

This invasive species is new to Hawaii and rapidly spreading throughout our state. While mostly a nuisance pest, these stinging insects can do significant harm to those who are allergic to their venom and to those who are incapable of getting away, like babies, elderly, and paraplegics.

Carpenter Ants

Second on our list is the carpenter ant because of its destructive capability. These ants get into soft, rotted wood and create tunnels and galleries. If left untreated, this damage can have significant implications for man-made structures.

Pharaoh Ants

These tiny ants are strictly a nuisance pest. They do not sting and they do not tunnel through the wood of a home. They can, however, spread harmful bacteria from trash to food storage areas and food prep surfaces.

Pavement Ants

The least threatening of all the pest ants you'll find around your home or business, pavement ants, can still be a problem, especially if they find a way into food storage areas. But, this ant species is mostly considered a nuisance pest.

Ant Exclusion: Managing moisture around a home, sealing entry points, and protecting food sources is the best way to deter ants. Here are some tips:

  • Make sure all of your gutters are unobstructed and in good working order. Wetness on exterior walls can cause rot, and rot is inviting to all ant species.

  • If you have water that collects in your yard or near your foundation walls, add soil or crushed rock to prevent this from happening. The dryer your yard is, the less attractive it will be to ants.

Keep twigs and leaves picked up.

  • Keep all trash in sealed cans.

  • Use a caulking gun to seal up gaps around pipes, fixtures, and other objects that pass through your walls.

  • Cut branches and bushes back from your exterior walls so that ants don't use them as a bridge.

When ants are found, it is a good idea to have a professional deal directly with encroaching ant colonies. Improper pest control can cause colonies to feel threatened and often results in a splitting, which will double the problem rather than solve it.
