Hawaii is a great place to live, especially if you're a termite. In eighty degree weather, termites are the most active. They can eat the wood inside a home or business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, costing property owners thousands of dollars in difficult repairs. Some species of termites can total a home in under three years. If you have not thought about termite protection for you Oahu home, you may want to reconsider.

How can I know if I have termites in my Oahu home?

The sad truth is, you can't know for sure unless you have a professional inspection. Termites get inside the wood and can sometimes be impossible to detect without proper equipment and expertise. There are a few things you can do to check for termites.

  • Inspect your basement walls for the mud tubes subterranean termites use to travel in and out of a home.

  • Inspect your interior walls for mud tubes that give these termites access all the way up to the attic spaces.

  • Inspect attic crawl spaces for satellite colonies or the base colonies of Formosan subterranean termites.

  • Peel up mulch around your home and look for a bed of winged insects.

  • Look for termite damage on your fence, deck or other outside wooden structures.

  • Look for termite damage on interior walls, wallpaper, banisters or furniture.

  • Check window sills for the hard pepper-like droppings dry wood termites leave.

  • Look for holes in window and door frames.

  • Listen to your walls. You can sometimes hear termite activity.

  • Look for sagging floors, bulging walls and doors and windows that don't shut properly. Understand that this type of damage happens in the later stages of an infestation.

  • Winged swarmers are also a sign of infestation. Termite swarmers do not travel far. If you find them on your property, there is a good chance they came from a mature colony within your walls.
