The video below is a great reminder of the importance of keeping your home or business pest proofed. Cockroaches are just one of the many pests that can easily sneak inside, and if your home or business promotes their lifestyle, they will multiply quickly.

As seen in the video, these roaches found a nice home for themselves in piled up cardboard outside a commercial establishment. Because this cardboard was likely untouched for quite some time, what may have started as a few roaches quickly turned into an unsightly infestation!

Not only is it a horrifying sight to find such an infestation, but cockroaches also carry many health risks.  These pests are known to spread various types of harmful bacteria, viruses, germs and diseases. As they find food in places such as the garbage, they collect the pathogens on the spine of their legs and then trace it wherever they travel. And since many roaches are found in kitchens, this means food prep areas, counters, cupboards, and open food could be contaminated. If left unaddressed, roach infestations can jeopardize the health of the patron and employees, or in the case of a home infested with cockroaches, your family.

So, what can you do to avoid a scene from this video? Pest proofing your property to prevent cockroaches is not as hard as you may think. Here are some tips to keep your home or business cockroach free from the Hawaii pest control experts at Sandwich Isle:

  • Do not let things such as cardboard pile up. Organizing storage areas and eliminating clutter will harder for roaches to find hiding spaces.

  • Take the trash out regularly so that you are not providing a great source of food and bacteria for any roaches to get into and trace around.  Dumpsters should also be emptied frequently so as not to attract roaches and other pests outside your establishment.

  • Regularly clean and sanitize food surfaces. Since roaches are most active at night, you may not even see the ones that could be scurrying across your counters.

  • Keep all food stored in containers with tight fitting lids. The only thing worse than a cockroach on the counter is one in the food.
