What Is A Feral Cat?

feral cat

Let's start by defining what a feral cat is. The word feral means: in a wild state, especially after escape from captivity or domestication. A feral animal isn't an animal that was birthed in the wild. It is a creature that was once in the care of humans. This could be anything from a beloved pet to a farm animal like a rooster or pig. But, the word feral is sometimes used in a broader sense to define all animals that are recognized as coming from domestication, even if they were birthed in the wild.

So, what does it mean to be a feral cat? A feral cat is an animal that was once domesticated, but living in the wild has altered its personality. If you've seen the movie Madagascar, you can get that idea right out of your head. In the real world, a domesticated cat isn't going to become wild like Alex the lion did. It isn't hunger that turns animals wild and makes them want to eat their best friend (who happens to be a tasty zebra). When an animal lives in the wild, it becomes acutely in tune to the fact that there is a food chain. They eat animals to survive and other animals eat them to survive. This causes them to be less trusting of all animals, including humans.

Here are some things to always remember about feral cats:

  1. Feral cats are wild cats. That means they are as unpredictable as any other wild animal. If they get spooked, they can attack.

  2. Feral cats are dangerous. A house cat is not large enough to prey on humans, but they can do significant damage to you if you scare them enough.

  3. A feral cat may have been born in the wild and never known domestication. If that is the case, they will be even more unpredictable around humans.

  4. You should never feed or trust a stray cat. If you see a cat that has no collar, is thin, or is mangy, call a professional pest control company that has a wildlife control division like Sandwich Isle Pest Solutions.
