Formosan Termite

Small Pest, Big Problem undefined undefined

For the home or business owner the Formosan termite in Hawaii is a subtle and relentless pest that causes millions of dollars in damage every year. Adapted to our climate and able to survive underground at depths up to 50 feet below the surface, the Formosan subterranean termite is one of natures foremost recycling machines. This species naturally attacks the cellulose of fallen trees, reducing it to the basic nutrients required for healthy soils.

Unfortunately, the Formosan subterranean termite does not distinguish between a fallen ironwood in the forest and the yellow pine ceiling joist in you home. This species is an equal opportunity consumer. It subsists underground for much of its life, carefully constructing mud tunnels over impenetrable surfaces to gain access to structures through foundation cracks and joints as small as 1/32 of an inch. Subterranean termite invasions often go undetected for month or years, causing extensive and expensive damage to structural members or establishing massive penetrations of substructures.

There are many termite control products available in Hawaii. They are divided into two categories for ground termite control: liquids and baits. Many years of trials in Hawaii have illustrated that the most effective liquid termiticide is Termidor, and the most effective bait is the Sentricon® Termite Colony Elimination System.
