FAQ's About Your Tent Fumigation Service

Before you schedule a tent fumigation for your home, you may have some questions for us.  Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about your fumigation in Hawaii.  If we haven't answered your question here or if you have any additional questions for our fumigation experts, please be sure to contact us and we will get back to you with an answer as quickly as we can.

Q. How do I know it is time for me to fumigate my home?

A. For Drywood termites: If you are seeing termite droppings around your home in 3 or more areas , if it is been 10 or more years or more since your last fumigation, or if you are planning on selling your home, now is a great time to fumigate.

For Ground Termites: If ground termites are already present in or around your home, you will want to fumigate as soon as possible as well as follow up with another ground termite treatment to help keep them away. Compared to drywood termites whose colonies only consist of a few hundred members, ground Termites have thousands of members in their colony, and their appetite is insatiable.

For other pests such as bed bugs and powderpost beetles, contact us to see if fumigation in the right choice for you.

Q. How do I properly prepare for my home tent fumigation?

A. Please check out our fumigation preparation page as well as our fumigation resources page for a general overview of what you need to do as a homeowner before your tent fumigation.

Q. Is there anything that cannot be fumigated?

A. Yes, there are things that cannot be fumigated such as people, animals, plants, and other living things.  Also, any  foods that do not have the original manufacturer’s’ seal intact, and waterproof mattresses and pillows,(unless the waterproof cover can come off, cannot be fumigated.

Q. How long will we have to be out of our home for our tent fumigation?

A. Generally speaking, the entire fumigation process takes 24-30 hours.  This includes the time for us to set up until we deem your home safe to reenter.  Times may be longer for certain pests such as bed bugs or powder post beetles, but we will inform you of this prior to your fumigation so you can make the appropriate arrangements.

Q. Will my home be secure during my tent fumigation?

A. Sandwich Isle now offers FumeGuard, a fumigant monitoring and portable intrusion alarm system for monitoring the status of fumigation and for deterring and detecting intruders. You can rest assured if you choose to utilize this service your home and belongings will be safe while under the cover of our tents.  For more information on this service, please contact us or visit our FumeGuard page.

Q. Are there any special instructions once I return home after a fumigation?

A. The only thing you have to worry about is relaxing and enjoying your home free of termites and other pests.  Your home will be completely safe to reenter as we check all areas of your home for any remaing gas prior to giving the "all clear" to reenter. There is no need to wipe down counters, wash plates or anything!

Q. Could there be any delays once my tent fumigation is scheduled?

A. It is possible there are delays with your tent fumigation service.  We give you a call the day before your fumigation to provide you with a timeframe that our crew will be arriving.  However, because tent fumigation is a very skilled and dangerous process heavy winds, rains, and other inclement weather may slow our crews down. Also, we occasionally  run into situations that maybe more difficult than we originally projected such as an infestation that was more severe than originally though, which is why we check on our crews frequently to make sure they are on schedule so we can update you as soon as we think there might be a delay. In short, delays can happen, but the office will call you as soon as we know if there will be a delay to your service.
