Easily recognized by their many legs, these creatures are commonly found throughout most of the United States. Although their name means “100 legs”, centipedes have one set of legs per segment of their body and they really have somewhere between 15-177 legs total. Their segmented bodies are long and flat and can range from 1/8th of an inch to 6 inches in length. Centipedes can move very fast and can live up to 6 years.
Centipedes prefer dark, damp places. Outdoors, they can be found under stones, in rotting logs, in mulch or yard clippings. If the conditions are right in homes, they can be found in basements, closets, crawl spaces, or any area where other insects are found. They hide in cracks and crevices during the day and feed at night on silverfish, carpet beetle larvae, cockroaches, bed bugs, spiders or other small arthopods.
Centipedes actually have the ability to bite and are poisonous. The poison from their fangs, located behind the head, is used to kill insects, which are their primary food. To a human, a bite feels like that of a bee sting and can be dangerous, especially if there is an allergic reaction in response to the bite. Children will be more sensitive to a centipede's bite.
Centipedes can be difficult to control because of their elusive nature and their ability to hide in the smallest of cracks and crevices. You should keep clutter, piles of yard waste, construction material and other yard debris away from your home to reduce the number of hiding places for centipedes. A Sandwich Isle pest professional will design a customized integrated pest management program that fits the specific needs of your property, one that is sure to get rid of centipedes.
Centipedes are not pests many homeowners have much success eradicating. Many do-it-yourself remedies to rid your property of centipedes simply do not work as the chemicals they use are not effective. Remember – if misused or mixed improperly, pesticides can be very dangerous to people, pets or plants.
