What are cockroaches?

There are 19 species of cockroaches found in Hawaii; 3 of which are commonly associated with humans and are considered pests.  The three main species in Hawaii are the American, German and Surinam or "burrowing" cockroach.

The American cockroach is the largest of the common roaches and is reddish-brown in color.  Their wings appear larger than their body.  They prefer warm, moist areas and can often be found in rock walls, tree stumps, heavy vegetation and other organic matter.  They are not typically found inside homes except occasionally in crawl spaces.

The German cockroach is rather small compared to the American cockroach and is light brown to tan in color with dark stripes that run lengthwise on its body.  This species is the most common to infest homes and restaurants and they eat all kinds of food.  They prefer moist areas and can be found during the day hiding behind baseboards, in cracks in cabinets or pantries, or under stoves, refrigerators and dishwashers.

Surinam or "burrowing" cockroaches have a shiny dark brown to black head with dark brown wings.  They are 3/4 of an inch in length and are considered a yard pest, found in the grass.  They only occasionally invade the crawl spaces in our homes.

Why do I have them?

The German and American cockroach both seek similar environments in which to breed.  A suitable site will consist of food, water, humidity, warmth and security and improper sanitation may provide cockroaches all of the necessities for survival. The American cockroach prefers to breed in and around underground sewer facilities and utility networks from which they may venture out into other buildings.  German cockroaches are much more likely to be found moving from place to place in bags, boxes and even on clothing. With both species, it only takes one pregnant female to create an infestation and cockroach numbers can increase nearly exponentially if conditions are favorable.

Are they dangerous?

Yes, they can be.  All cockroaches can pick up germs on the spines of their legs and bodies as they crawl through decaying matter or sewage and then carry these germs into food or onto food surfaces.  They have been known to cause asthma in children; asthma allergens build up in deposits of droppings, secretions, cast skins and dead bodies of roaches.
