Drywood Termites

What are drywood termites?

Drywood termites typically nest and feed in wood with no decay, which has a very low moisture content.  Unlike subterranean termites, they do not require contact with the soil in order to live. Thus, they can seriously damage wooden objects such as furniture, fences and utility posts. In the United States, drywood termites are found in a narrow strip from Virginia, south to Florida, along the Gulf of Mexico and from Mexico to northern California and throughout Hawaii.  Small swarming flights can occur year round in Hawaii, frequently after rain storms. Winged adults are dark brown and about 1/2-inch long. The white, soft-bodied nymphs remain in the galleries and are not seen unless the wood is broken open.

Why do I have drywood termites?

Drywood termites in Hawaii, as their name suggest, only infest dry wood and are often introduced into residential dwellings and commercial buildings via infested furniture or other wooden objects.

Are they dangerous?

Drywood termites do not threaten the health of people or pets, but they may attack wood products of all kinds. Structural timbers, frame and other woodwork in buildings, as well as furniture and other wooden objects may be seriously damaged by their presence.  Although the damage can be serious, they are less economically devastating than the subterranean termites because they are less widespread.
