Fleas

What are fleas?

Fleas are a type of parasitic pest. The most common species of flea found around the world is the cat flea. While they prefer to feed on cats, they will happily feed on the blood of most warm blooded mammals, including dogs, rodents, and humans.

They are dark reddish-brown in color, have six legs, and have a flat body. They are very small, only ranging in size from 1/12th to 1/6th of an inch in length. Fleas are wingless, but have very powerful back legs that allow them to have an 8 inch vertical jump from the ground. Their ability to jump large distances allows them to easily find new hosts to travel and feed on.

Why do I have them?

Fleas are commonly associated with pets, and it is true that one of the most common ways fleas enter into homes is by traveling inside on dogs or cats. This, however, doesn’t mean that if you don’t have pets you won’t have fleas. They can jump onto your shoes, clothing, and other belongings and can be brought inside of your home. Fleas can live for about 100 days and during that time the females can produce 400-500 offspring, all ready to infest your home.

Are fleas dangerous?

Yes, fleas are considered to be dangerous because they can carry and transfer diseases that affect people, including murine typhus. They are also in-between hosts of tapeworm, which can infest cats and dogs, and rodent tapeworm, which can affect humans. Also, when a flea bites a person or animal, that area often becomes inflamed and itchy. If the bites break open because of frequent itching, they could become infected and require medical attention.

How do I get rid of fleas?

Getting rid of fleas from your property can be very difficult, frustrating, and time consuming. Professionals have the experience, knowledge and equipment to safely and effectively eliminate fleas, their eggs, and larvae from your home. If you are having difficulties with fleas inside your home, contact the professionals at Sandwich Isle today.

Can I do it myself?

Flea control is best left to the professionals. Most do-it-yourself flea control methods are not effective and if not used or mixed properly can be dangerous for you, your family, and pets. It is best to contact the professionals at the first sign of fleas in your home. This allows the problem to be taken care of quickly, saving you both time and money.

How can I prevent this in the future?

Preventing fleas from invading your home and property can be a difficult task.
