True flies have only one set of wings and have a rapid rate of growth, going from egg to adult in about seven days. There are more than 240,000 different species of flies in the world. Approximately one third of them, including mosquitoes and gnats can be found throughout the United States. Many of the most common flies in Hawaii include large species, such as bronze bottle flies, dog dung flies, flesh flies, and house flies. There are also a variety of common small flies, including drain flies, fruit flies, fungus gnats, and humpback flies.
Flies infest properties because they are looking for a safe breeding site. They are also attracted to areas where a food source is present and will feed on a variety of things including:
Fresh fruits and vegetables
Clogged, dirty, or slow moving drains
All flies are known disease carriers, many of which can be transmitted to humans. Flies typically breed in garbage, excrement of animals and humans, sewers, compost piles, and any other place where matter is decaying. This enables them to pick up various kinds of diseases which can be transmitted to people by biting or by landing on food, where the bacteria and viruses are released. The diseases that they can carry include Salmonella and E. Coli.
Controlling flies in and around your property can be a difficult task. Unless you remove all of their food sources and breeding areas, they can very quickly re-infest. A Sandwich Isle pest professional will design a customized integrated pest management program that fits the specific needs of your property, one that is sure to get rid of flies.
While there are some “over the counter” fly sprays and control options available, they are generally ineffective unless you properly continue their use. Also you need to remember that if chemicals are used in Do-It-Yourself pest control, they can be dangerous to humans and pets if mixed or used improperly.
Sandwich Isle pest professionals use the least amount of material possible while still resolving your pest problem.
