What are millipedes?

Millipedes are not an insect, but actually an arthropod.  Unlike centipedes, which they are often mistaken for, millipedes have two sets of legs for every segment of their body and when they move, their legs appear to be moving in a wave-like motion.  They do not have a thousand legs like their name implies, but actually have somewhere between 80 and 400.  A millipede's legs are shorter than a centipede’s and in general, a millipede cannot move very fast.

Why do I have them?

Most millipedes feed on damp and decaying vegetation and spend most of their lives in the soil.  Occasionally, millipedes will venture from their moist living places into homes, but often die because of lack of moisture and food.

Are they dangerous?

Millipedes are not venomous and do not have fangs, but they can emit an obnoxious fluid to defend themselves. Some varieties can spray this fluid several inches. The fluid can cause irritation to the skin in some people and should be removed right away. Additionally, it may take some scrubbing to get rid of the odor.

How do I get rid of millipedes?

Millipedes can be difficult to control.  A Sandwich Isle pest professional will design a customized integrated pest management program that fits the specific needs of your property, one that is sure to get rid of millipedes.

Can I do it myself?
