What are ducks?

The most common species of duck found invading properties in Hawaii is the Mallard duck. The mallard is one of the most recognized and invasive of all ducks and is the ancestor of several domestic breeds. The average length for adult Mallards is 23-24 inches and they can weigh from between 2.4 and 2.7 pounds.

The male mallard has a very distinctive appearance with a glossy bottle-green head, a white collar at the base of their neck, a purplish- brown breast, grey-brown wings, and a grey belly. The male’s hind end is black in color and their dark tail has white edges.

Females are much less colorful and are generally a mottled brown to brownish-orange color and they provide the common “quack” sound that is associated with ducks.

Mallards are considered to be omnivores and feed on a wide variety of food, including worms, crustaceans, insects, roots, and other plant materials.

Why do I have them?

Mallards invade properties that offer them easy access to food, water, and nesting areas. Mallards can be found invading properties that have ponds, pools, grassy areas, and heavy vegetation. They can be found nesting under decks, porches, and in the landscaping found around homes.

Are ducks dangerous?

Yes, ducks can be considered to be dangerous. Ducks can become aggressive towards people and pets. Their droppings can cause people to slip and fall. Their droppings can also lower the aesthetic value of your home and property. Ducks can damage landscaping and lawns as they feed and nest. Mallards are an invasive species and by interbreeding they are causing native Hawaiian duck species to become threatened.
