NORWAY RATS

What are Norway rats?

Norway rats are a species of rat that are commonly found living outdoors in fields, farmlands, and around woodpiles. Their fur is brown in color and is speckled with black hairs. Their underbelly is a grayish-white color. They have a stocky, “heavy-bodied” appearance and adults range in length from 7-9 ½ inches, not including their tail. Norway rats are not good climbers and therefore enter into buildings on the ground level or through basements.

Why do I have them?

Norway rats are attracted to properties that offer them shelter, and that are in close proximity to food and water sources.

Are Norway rats dangerous?

Yes, rats are considered to be very dangerous. They carry a variety of dangerous diseases, including typhus, jaundice, rat-bite fever, cowpox virus, trichinosis and salmonellosis. They can also introduce fleas and mites onto properties. Rats can cause a lot of physical damage to properties as well. They have been known to chew on and through wires, pipes, insulation, and drywall. These damages can lead to fires, water damage, and mold issues. They can also destroy personal items like pictures, furniture, flooring, and clothing.

Can I do it myself?

Hawaii rodent control is best left to the professionals. If you find that rats have made your home their home, it is best to contact professionals as quickly as possible.

Is the treatment safe?

When controlling rats on your property and in your home, the technicians, whenever possible, will use natural products, baits, and exclusions techniques. If more traditional pesticides are needed, you can be sure that they are EPA registered and will be used in the smallest amounts necessary to eliminate your infestation. Also, if any pesticides are used our technicians all follow the strictest of guidelines to ensure that plants, pets and people on your property will not be harmed.

How can I prevent this in the future?

As a homeowner, along with having year-round rodent control services in place, there are several things that you can do around your property to help prevent rats from choosing it to call home. Rat prevention tips include: placing woodpiles, gardens, compost piles and outdoors trash cans a good distance away from the exterior of your home. You will also want to seal any gaps or holes found around basements, windows, and doors. Make sure that pet food is stored in sealed containers and that food kept in your kitchen is placed in sealed containers or kept in the refrigerator. Additionally, clutter in basements and storage areas should be kept to a minimum.
