What are pigeons and doves?

Hawaii has three major species of doves that are considered pests. Commonly known as pigeons, all of these doves are invasive species to the Hawaiian Islands, causing competition with our native bird species.

Zebra dove (Geopelia striata)
Zebra doves were introduced to Hawaii in 1922 from Asia. They are brownish-grey with black and white bars and have a distinct soft "coo". They also have a distinct courtship where the male will bow, "coo", and spread his tail feathers. You probably have seen these birds with mangled feet or missing toes. This is caused by a disease known as bumble foot.

Spotted dove (Spilopelia chinensis)
Spotted doves were introduced to Hawaii in the mid 1800s from Asia. They are brown, grey and buff with a distinct spotted collar and a long tail. One of few invasive birds that can survive in Hawaii’s forests, the spotted dove is found in relatively small flocks compared to other doves.

Rock Dove (Columba livia)
Rock doves are believed to have been introduced to Hawaii as early as 1788. Commonly called the rock pigeon (or just “pigeon"), this bird is the largest of Hawaii’s invasive doves, measuring in at just over a foot long. It is bluish grey with black bars across its wings and a glossy neck showing blue, green, and pink iridescence. It is native to Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Why do I have them?

Pigeons and doves on Oahu seek out sites that offer them protection and that is close to sources of heat, food and water for their roosting and nesting. The most common places for pigeons to be found nesting and roosting are in eaves, overhangs, roof tops, gutters and drainage pipes. Zebra doves are often found wherever people are feeding birds.

Are pigeons and doves dangerous?

Pigeons and doves are extremely dirty birds. They can easily cause disease and damages. Droppings from pigeons and doves are known to cause slips and falls, which is especially dangerous for business owners and their droppings can also corrode many structures and statues. Pigeons in particular may carry diseases such as cryptococcosis, toxoplasmosis, salmonella, food poisoning and more. Also, pigeon droppings can grow the fungus which causes histoplasmosis. Zebra doves also are known to carry avian malaria and avian pox. These diseases are a big threat to Hawaii’s native birds.
